A significant Equinox and Solstice marker
This marker is known to be the spiritual cornerstone of Machu Picchu. As both a solstice and equinox marker, its shadow alignments reveal volumes of astronomical data. This plein air painting (done on-site) illustrates the ancient astronomical observatory whose Inkan name of Intihuatana means ‘hitching post of the sun’. This is because at the exact equinox, both spring and fall, the sun stands almost directly above the pillar creating no shadow at all, and for a moment is ‘tied’ to the rock.
